There is no doubt that a bad translation can impact negatively an exchange as it can change the original message.  The meeting between Angela Merkel and Victor Ponta is a perfect example.

During his meeting with the German chancellor Merkel, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta experienced the consequences of an incorrect translation. While talking about corruption, Ponta mentioned his intention to weaken it. However, his translator has mistakenly translated the idea of strengthening corruption instead.

The Romanian Prime Minister originally aimed to highlight the fact that Romania’s economy has recovered after several years of instability and that he wanted to become a strategic partner for Germany.
