Tahiti has been in the news recently as its national football team are competing in the Confederations Cup in Brazil, they lost their first game 6-1 against Nigeria, followed by 10-0 against Spain yesterday evening.

Although credit has to be given to them as they are literally are a team of amateurs, with only one player playing at a high level in France Marama Vahirua.

Tahiti is the largest member of the Society islands in the French Polynesia, with the world famous Bora Bora being one of those. It is named Bora Bora after visitors to the island misheard its actual name Pora Pora it is also named “the romantic island”. The other main island in Tahiti is called Moorea which is referred to as “the island of love”.

Tahiti’s main export is its famous black pearls but it also exports vanilla, coconut oil and also ornamental fish for the aquarium industry. The main focal point of its economy is tourism, it is a popular holiday destination located between Australia and the American west coast.

Some facts about Tahiti:

* Over half of Tahiti’s population is under the age of 20.
* There are more hotel rooms in an average Las Vegas hotel, than there are on all 118 islands in Tahiti.
* The letter B doesn’t exist in Tahitian.

Hopefully this article will make you think of Tahiti as more than just a place to visit.
