How Do Translation Prices Compare?

Various factors affect translation prices. Whether you go for pricier or cheap translation, most translation costs are "piece rates", i.e. per word, 100 words, 1000 words, line, or page. But, as well as translation cost, you need to consider the quality of the work.

As well as the length and technical complexity of the text, translation costs and translation rates depend on how rare the languages involved are. The translation cost for rarer languages is obviously greater. The speed at which the work must be completed also affects translation prices.

The best translation companies have the best systems installed to provide the highest quality possible while keeping translation costs reasonable. Cheap translation can be offered at a low translation cost because it's been done too quickly, or not to a high enough standard.

But if you're considering outsourcing translation work and getting quotes for translation rates, there are several questions you should ask as well as getting a translation cost.

Ask an agency how it selects its translators, and what qualifications and experience their translators have. Also ask the organisation how it ensures the quality of its translation. If it offers cheap translation by cutting corners, you'll soon find out. Of course, one of the ways an agency could offer you a low translation cost is buy using computer software rather than a human translator. Needless to say, this may result in low translation rates, but would be disastrous. Often, an extremely cheap translation is cheap for a reason.
