About Iceland and the Icelandic language

Stats about the Icelandic language that highlight the need for Icelandic translation services

A sparsely-populated North Atlantic island, Iceland is famous for its hot springs, geysers and active volcanoes. Lava fields cover much of the land and hot water is pumped from under the ground to supply much of the country’s heating. The capital and largest city is Reykjavik, one of the cleanest, greenest and safest cities in the world. Iceland ranks high in economic, political and social stability and equality and the country runs almost completely on renewable energy. Iceland’s economy is redeeming itself, unemployment has fallen to just below 5% and inflation is 3%.

Icelandic is an Indo-European language belonging to the North Germanic branch of Germanic Languages. A great majority of Icelandic speakers – about 320,000 – live in Iceland. More than 8,000 speakers live in Denmark, with others living in the United States and Canada.
