About Serbia and the Serbian language

Serbia has a population of over 7 million people. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in Southeast Europe. Native to 88% of the population, Serbian is the official language of Serbia and one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Serbian has stemmed from the dialect of Serbo-Croatian. It is the only European language with active digraphia, using both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.

Serbia has an unfavorable trade balance: imports exceed exports by 22%. Serbia’s exports, however, recorded a steady growth in recent years reaching $14.8 billion in 2016. Serbia’s energy sector is one of the largest and most important in the country’s economy. It is a net exporter of electricity, had an abundance of coal and significant reserves of oil and gas.

Serbia has a strategic transportation location since the country’s backbone, Morava Valley, represents the easiest route of land travel from continental Europe to Asia Minor and the Near East.
