About Yiddish

Yiddish is a German language of Ashkenazi Jewish origin spoken in many parts of the world.  The language developed as a fusion of different German dialects with abstracts of Hebrew, Aramic and Slavic vocabulary and some traces of vocabulary from the Romance languages.

The language originated in the Ashkenazi culture that that developed from about the 10th century in the Rhineland and then spread to Central and Eastern Europe and to other continents.

Yiddish isn’t an official language of any country. Jewish people from various Eastern European countries, mainly Germany, Russia, Poland and the Ukraine speak Yiddish.
