The challenge
To non-technical people, a technical document can seem like another language, even before it is translated. The language to describe technical, mathematical, engineering and scientific jargon – such as the names of machine parts, architectural terms, the workings of algorithms and behaviour of chemical reactions - can seem strange and baffling to the best of us. What happens when a technical document is in a different language to the people who have to use it?

At Wolfestone Translation, we take our responsibilities as technical translators very seriously. We don't believe that technical translation is a matter of swapping words and phrases. We don't accept literal technical translation. Because getting technical translation wrong can prove fatal, a technical translator must be able to get it exactly right! It could be getting a procedure wrong, incorrectly describing how to operate a dangerous piece of machinery or giving incorrect or misleading guidelines. Such technical translation errors can be devastating for companies, individuals and their families.

Technical translation is more than a matter of trying to read the instructions to use a DVD player. It requires an understanding of the cultural background and the technical knowledge used in writing any technical document. This requires local knowledge alongside technical knowledge and experience.
